Manufacturers frequently label coil splits as “coil taps” — particularly in marketing copy and product descriptions. The Fender Player II Stratocaster HSS, PRS SE CE 24, and many other guitars describe their feature as a “coil tap” when the actual function is a coil split. This is so widespread that many players use the terms interchangeably.
The practical test: If engaging the feature produces a genuinely bright, single-coil-sounding, hum-introducing tone, it’s a coil split. If it sounds like the same humbucker at lower volume with a touch more air, it’s a coil tap.
Is Coil Splitting Worth Having?
It depends on what you’re trying to achieve.
